US Park Police Horse Stables Education Center

Who We Are

The US Park Police Horse Stables and Education Center includes a full police station, a horse stable for the officers and horses of the Mounted Unit and an Education Center that welcomes the public to learn about the horses and their history on the National Mall. The Trust for the National Mall completed construction on the new state-of-the-art, sustainable horse stables and education center at the end of 2022, opening to the public in spring 2023. This milestone project replaced the original stables, which were built as a temporary structure in the 1970s. The Education Center includes videos and interactive exhibits for guests to learn about the special bond between officers and their horses, the care that goes into supporting them, and the work of the Mounted Unit.

What We Do

Volunteers help the Education Center at the US Park Police Horse Stables function at its best by creating a hospitable, informative, and visitor-centered environment. The primary task of a volunteer is to interact with and assist visitors. This may include sharing historical and cultural information about the US Park Police, the Mounted Unit, the horses and their care, and the National Mall, as well as providing directions and orientation to the park and surrounding area.  Other duties include opening and closing the Education Center, greeting visitors and sharing stories, and facilitating interactions, like identifying horses in the paddocks and guiding exhibit activities.
