Lincoln Memorial Undercroft

Description

About the Site: The Lincoln Memorial Undercroft is a groundbreaking new exhibit space beneath the Lincoln Memorial, featuring exhibits on Lincoln's legacy and the history of the Memorial's construction. Designed by architect Henry Bacon, the Memorial was dedicated in 1922. The undercroft is a massive subterranean space that holds the pillars necessary to support the Memorial on the soft mud of the Potomac River, known for graffiti dating back to the Memorial's original construction. This new museum allows the public to see this space and learn about the history and meaning of the Memorial above.

Responsibilities: Volunteers at this site will work closely with rangers to help with ticket information, support visitors' ticketed-entry, and provide roving interpretation inside the exhibit spaces.

Training Information: The below shifts are for training dates. Please read the below information on trainings before signing up. If you would like to attend a training and are having trouble signing up, please let Emmanuel know at emmanuel_ekekwe@nps.gov, or email volunteer@nationalmall.org.

The Interpretation & Education staff will be hosting training events for the entire week of June 1st-6th, and on June 15th and 17th. Each training date will have two sessions:

AM Session, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

9:00 am - 10:30 am (BUEY office, 750 Buckeye Drive): Hands-on instruction, scanner operations, and review of Undercroft Operations Guidelines

11:00 am - 12:00 PM (LIUN): Tour of Undercroft

LUNCH BREAK (if attending both sessions) from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm. Please bring your own lunch.

PM Session, 1:00 pm - 5:30 pm

1:00 pm - 4 pm (LIUN): Practice of staff rotation at the Undercroft

(optional) 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm (BUEY): Debrief

We encourage everyone to attend at least one morning session and one afternoon session. These can be on the same day, or you can sign up for a morning session and afternoon session on separate days as best fits your schedule. If it is impossible for you to attend one of each session, we ask that you prioritize attending at least one afternoon session. We understand that this is a difficult time commitment on short notice. We are happy to provide transportation from East Potomac Park to the Lincoln Memorial, and the 4:30-5:30 pm debrief for the afternoon sessions are optional to attend.
